In the summer of 2020, talk of a troop withdrawal plan from the Trump Administration was in the air. In response, the House Committee of Armed Services voted on whether to block funds to remove troops. Just before the vote, the New York Times claimed the existence of Russian-paid Taliban to kill American troops. This was a claim made by “American intelligence officials”, according to The Times’.
Whether due to The Times’ report or of their own volition, the Committee voted on blocking the funds, ensuring the continuation of the war at the time.
The New York Times has since removed that article from their records.
